10 Woods Lane, Ipswich MA

10 Woods Lane, the Plouff-Grant House (1837)

Sanford Peatfield sold this lot to Eliza Plouff, wife of Edward Plouff on Feb. 4, 1837 (296:291). The Plouffs lived on Turkey Shore, at the rear of this lot. Mr. Plouff built a house and sold the house and land to Robert Jordan in 1849. William Grant acquired the property in 1859 (594:88).

Woods Lane (Fruit Street) in 1872
In the 1872 map, Woods Lane was called Fruit Street, and Turkey Shore was called Prospect Street. In this map, Edward Plouff’s widow Eliza lived on Prospect Street, and the house they built on Fruit Lane had been sold to J. B. Grant.

Edward Plouf purchased and operated the old tannery on Turkey Shore from 1849 to 1863. Their sons John W. and Edward Plouff Jr. were sent to the front during the Civil War.

Edward and Eliza Plouff’s son, Augustine H. Plouff, owned a store on Central Street, which moved to Market Street after the 1894 Central Street fire.

Members of the Plouff family are buried at the Old North Burying Ground in Ipswich.
