Samuel J. Goodhue’s Pier 1 Canoe Depot

In the early 20th Century, Samuel J. Goodhue operated a canoe rental business on the Ipswich River at the end of Peatfield St in the area known as Pole Alley. Samuel J. Goodhue was born in 1852 and suffered from a crippling birth defect. He died in 1912, and his monument is at the Old North Burying Ground in Ipswich. His home was immediately behind the business, but neither building still stands.

Goodhue's pier is long-gone, but the location is still a popular spot for launching kayaks.
Samuel J. Goodhue’s pier and his house behind it are long gone, but the white house on the left still stands. This location is now a public boat launch. Goodhue apparently needed to use crutches all his life, having been disabled from birth.
