In Episode 2, we begin our walk on East Street with a bit of background for our tour. On the left as we head up Spring Street was the home of the enslaved Freeman family, and their son John freeman who fought in the Revolutionary War. Heading up the hill, on the right is the boyhood home of Arthur Wesley Dow, and just past that is a mysterious circle of trees, about which Gordon has a theory. At the top of the Hill, we visit the Dow memorial and take a walk around Baker’s Pond to the town’s new water tank. We continue down the other side of the hill to the Immigrants Cemetery, and try to find a popular spot that was called “Second Sands.”
Truly enjoyed the walk down East Street and up Spring Street. I was one of the children who love to walk to Second Sands. There really was sand. More important, we would collect Lady Slippers along the trail to take home to our mothers. Baker’s Pond was always the place to go for skating. We would all get as close as possible to the end where the spring fed the pond to watch the goldfish swimming under the ice. Using our sleds down Spring Street was another winter play time. Traffic was very intermittent on East Street during the snow thus never any accidents with cars. We all loved to carry pieces of cardboard to the top of Highland Avenue to the pine tree forest and slide down the hill overlooking High Street. Ipswich was a wonderful town to grow up in. The older I get, the more I remember.
Thank you Gordon, I loved both episode 1 and 2. Please keep them coming.
