In 2010, the Ipswich Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to begin exploring the environmental, technical, logistical, and economic factors surrounding the removal of the Ipswich Mills Dam. In 2017, the Town was granted funds from the Massachusetts Environmental Trust to support conceptual designs for removing the dam and visual renderings of what a free-flowing river would look like at the site. The feasibility study was completed in 2019 and set the stage for the Town’s decision to remove the dam.
The project lead was the Horsley Witten Group, and funding was provided by the National Fish and Wildlife Federation (NFWF) through a grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior, the MA Division of Ecological Restoration (DER), and the Massachusetts Environmental Trust (MET)
