The Ipswich Historical Commission awarded the 2025 Mary P. Conley Preservation Award to the owners of the historic Edward Brown House at 27 High Street. Edward Brown arrived in Ipswich with the early settlers, married Faith Lord, and served as a marshal for the town. The eastern half is believed to have been constructed in the mid-17th century, making it one of the oldest houses in New England. The summer beam has flat bevels, the floor joists were cut with a pit saw, and the hand-made bricks in the fireplace are an unusual size. The western side of the house was added in the mid-18th century, and the roof was raised to accommodate the saltbox addition in the rear. This house continued to be owned by descendants of Edward & Faith Brown well into the 19th Century. Read more about the Edward Brown House.
