52 High Street, the Henry Kingsbury – Robert Lord house (1660)

The Lord-Harris House, 52 High Street

In 1660, Henry Kingsbury, who arrived with John Winthrop in 1630 on the ship Arbella, sold a house lot at today’s 52 High Street to Robert Lord, the son of early Ipswich settlers Robert and Mary Waite Lord. Architectural details indicate, however, that the oldest part of this double house dates to after 1716, when John Lord, the son of Robert and Hannah Day Lord, gained possession. Over the succeeding years, the house was widened, and a saltbox shed was added to the east side. Five generations of the Lord family lived here until December 1820, when several descendants, all of whom were living in Maine, sold the house to Ephraim Harris. Part of the house continued to be owned by the heirs of Ephraim Harris into the 20th century. The interior of the house features late 19th-century Federal-period architecture.
