Claflin House, Wenham Museum

Tour of the Wenham Museum’s First Period Claflin House, Friday, October 16 at noon

On Friday, October 16, Ipswich architectural historian Gordon Harris will give a PowerPoint introduction to First Period architecture on the North Shore at the Wenham Museum, with a guided walk inside the Museum’s 1662 Claflin-Gerrish-Richards House to view its historic architectural features in person.

Having spent much of his working career as a carpenter, Gordon has a special interest in the construction and sociological history of Essex County houses constructed during the first century of English settlement. The Claflin-Gerrish-Richards House features exposed post-and-beam framing with large chamfered summer beams, a massive central fireplace, fine paneling, post-medieval overhangs, and the only serpentine corner braces found in any early house in America.
