Sue Nelson’s inventory of historic houses in Ipswich lists 84 Topsfield Rd. as the Davis-Goodhue House, constructed 1872-74. On June 22, 1874, Melinda J. Davis of Ipswich, and Ephraim Davis in consideration of $375 sold William Goodhue of Ipswich a parcel of land with the buildings thereon, on Topsfield Rd. and bounded by land formerly of Martha Dawson northwesterly. (Salem Deeds 907:90)
In the first half of the 20th Century, the William W. Goodhue 27-acre farm abutted the lot at 114 Topsfield Rd., according to the 1910 Ipswich map. The estate was divided between William W. Goodhue and his sister Fanny Booz in 1952. The Jarmolowicz family came into possession in 1972 and the house is still in that family.

Charles Leonard Goodhue, son of Aaron and Fanny, was baptized on Aug. 12, 1838 and was the brother of William Goodhue. He married on June 6, 1867, Hattie E. Hill. Professionally, he specialized in building municipal water systems, including Springfield MA, and the city’s reservoir in Ludlow. He was residing in Springfield by 1873, the year he oversaw the construction of a water system for the town of Leominster1. He served as the chairman of the Springfield Water Commission for many years. He built a fabulous mansion in Springfield that is still standing, but maintained his connection to Ipswich, and was a member of the Ipswich Historical Society in 1905.
On April 24, 1899 Charles L. Goodhue and Hattie E. Goodhue of Springfield sold part of the property bordering on Topsfield Rd. and land of William Goodhue for $1.00 and other considerations to Alice B. Dyer of Boston. “together with the dwelling house and the buildings thereon.” (Salem Deeds 1578:179) In August of that year he sold the remaining portion of the lot to John F. Brooks (Salem Deeds 1584:575).
