The Ipswich Grammar School was at this location in the 1832 Ipswich map, but was moved to the other side of the block in 1835.

John William Alton Hayes was involved in the hotel industry until his retirement in 1903. His relationship with the original owner of this house is uncertain.

The Hayes Hotel at Depot Square was built as a hosiery factory for the Peatfield brothers. It became a lodgking for homeless veterans, and burned in the 20th Century with loss of life.
