11 Wainwright is in the Historical Commission’s comprehensive index of historic houses, which gives an estimated date of 1856 -1872 because it doesn’t appear in the 1856 map but is in the 1872 map.
Jeremiah Spiller purchased this lot from A. P. lord in 1864 for $650.00. The deed doesn’t mention a house. Jeremiah Spiller sold the lot to his son, Jeremiah “Jerry Spiller,” in 1879 for the same amount. The deed doesn’t mention a house. However, the 1872 map shows a house at this location with the same shape, including the north wing, belonging to J. Spiller. Ipswich vital records show the birth of Jeremiah Spiller, son of Jeremiah, laborer, and Elizabeth, on Oct. 9, 1843.
The Ipswich Assessors’ site date of 1880 is an estimate. The house was apparently built between 1864, when Jeremiah Spiller purchased the lot, and 1872, when it is shown on the 1872 map. This house is shown in its present configuration in the 1893 Birdseye Map of Ipswich.
Little is known about Jeremiah Spiller. Ipswich Vital Records lists Jeremiah Spillar as a laborer. His wife’s name is shown as Elizabeth. He died Apr. 11, 1837, at 75 years of age. They had a son, also Jeremiah, who was born Oct. 9, 1843.
Vital Records also show a Jeremiah Spiller, who married Mary Fuller, on Nov. 28, 1793.
