Moses Kinsman Sr., a yeoman, was the son of Peletiah and Jane Kinsman, born in Ipswich, July 6, 1754. His grandfather, Quartermaster Robert Kinsman was one of the leaders of the Ipswich revolt against Governor Andros and taxation without representation, for which Ipswich is known as the “Birthplace of American Independence. In 1837, Susanna Kinsman, quit-claimed her share of the property to the other heirs of Moses Kinsman, including Mary Smith, Beamsley Smith, Lucy Cogswell, Aaron Cogswell, Joseph Kinsman, Hannah Brown, Ephraim Brown Jr., and the children of Moses Brown. The description in the deed described the property as “the deceased’s homestead and farm consisting of a dwelling house, barn and other buildings with the land under and adjoining on the west side of the road, containing about three acres, with about fifty acres of tillage and pasture on the east side of the road.” (297:47) Susanna died January 10, 1841, at age 76.
Moses Kinsman was succeeded by his son Moses Kinsman Jr., who built the present dwelling at 6 Northgate Rd. in 1836. He died in 1862. Brown on April 5, 1877 (974: 173). The farm included the house lot and land on the east side of the Northgate Road.
In the 1910 map, this was the home of Charles Gardiner Brown (1853-1938), who married Susan M. Peatfield, the daughter of Joseph and Caroline Heard Peatsfield, on May 10, 1877. They had two children, Marion Gardiner Brown and Jesse Appleton Brown.
