Ipswich MA 16 Elm Street house at the Smithsonian Museum

Saved from a bulldozer in the 1960s, this 18th-century Georgian-style Ipswich house has a new home as a permanent exhibit at the National Museum of American History.

Saving John Appleton’s house

John Appleton house, Ipswich

In 1962 the historic house at the corner of Central and North Main Streets was purchased by Exxon to demolish and build a gas station on the site. The Ipswich Heritage Trust was created to save it.
