Kitty Robinson began writing for the Ipswich Chronicle in her 50s, and when she died unexpectedly in 1979, flags in Ipswich flew at half mast. Kitty's daughter published "Measuring Time…by an Hour Glass" and "The Orchard" from her newspaper articles and personal memoirs.
Jenny Slew was born about 1719 as the child of a free white woman and a black slave. She lived her life as a free woman until 1762 when she was illegally enslaved by John Whipple. Jenny Slew is believed to be the first person held as a slave to be granted freedom through trial by jury.
Crane Beach belongs to the Trustees of Reservations and is part of the historic Crane Estate. The property includes Crane Castle, miles of shoreline, and over 5 miles of marked trails through the dunes at Castle Neck and Steep Hill Beach, open year-round.
Take a walk with us at Strawberry Hill, an Ipswich open space property with a meadow trail that takes you to Smith's Island, a small elevated area in the Great Marsh. Across Jeffreys Neck Road from Strawberry Hill is Greenwood Farm, a Trustees of Reservation Properties that features an early 18th Century house and the abutments of the old road that connected the farm to Newmarch St.

In 1967, Ipswich was proposed as a site for an anti-ballistic missile base, and in 1970 opponents prevented construction of a nuclear power plant on Town Farm Road that eventually was built in Seabrook.

In this episode, we took a 3 mile walk that started at the Turkey Hill Conservation area trailhead on Pineswamp Rd., and followed a connector trail to Essex County Greenbelt's new property, Kamon Farm. From there we enjoyed a scenic return on Pineswamp Rd. to the small parking lot for Turkey Hill.
The Asbury Grove Methodist Camp Meeting on Asbury St. in Hamilton is listed in the National Register of Historic Districts, and has a collection of historic buildings that were built between 1870 and 1960. 12,000 people, most from Boston, attended the first camp meeting in 1859.
In June, 1720, Elizabeth Attwood was convicted in the Ipswich Court on the charge that she "delivered of a male bastard and that she concealed the death."

In 1642, a dam and fulling mill were built on the Mill River in Rowley. The stone arch bridge on this property was constructed between 1850 and 1870.
The 1677 Whipple House and the 1694 Paine house at Greenwood Farm are two well-preserved First Period houses in Ipswich that are occasionally open to the public.
The 1941 Ipswich Town Report included a tribute to the late Water and Light Commissioner Walter G. Brown without mentioning that he murdered his former girlfriend Phyllis Chisholm and committed suicide.
